The former ironworks, which were founded in 1873, dominate the face of Völklingen. At that time the iron industry enjoyed a tremendous growth rate and transformed Völklingen into an economic boomtown. Take a trip to the city centre to see the old town hall, the St. Eligius Church and the Neo-Baroque Reconciliation Church is also worthwhile.

World Cultural Heritage Site Old Steel Mill
The steel mill in Völklingen was closed down in 1986 and elevated to a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994; it is the only authentically preserved steel mill in the world dating back to the peak of the iron and steel industry. Six imposing furnaces with the unique sloping lifts pierce the skyline. In the blasting hall (65,000 ft2/ 6,000 m2) where gigantic turbo compressors were used to produce the furnace blast necessary for pig iron production, events and exhibitions spanning a variety of themes are held throughout the year.
