The floating stage on the Saar
After its launch in 1911, the former cargo ship Péniche Maria Helena mainly transported gravel, steel, grain and beer along the rivers and canals of France and Germany. In 2006, she was extensively converted from a transport ship into a cultural steamer. During this process, the ship's original character was largely kept, as it was worth preserving. Today, the Maria Helena is the only theatre ship in Germany that is not moored in a harbour.
Along the cities on the Saar and Moselle, she attracts young and old explorers with her diverse cultural programme of theatre, cabaret, concerts and cinema. In her home port of Saarbrücken, she is moored at the Old Bridge close to St. Johanner Markt.
